to the Waikato River Trail
The walk is easy from the Arapuni Dam with a steeper section near Jones
Landing. In addition by walking another 20 minutes, you can begin or end
at Arapuni Village via the swing bridge.
Six major dams on the Waikato River (Atiamuri, Whakamaru, Waipapa,
Maraetai, Arapuni and Karapiro) have created lakes bordering the South
Waikato district. The report highlights opportunities on and around Lake
Arapuni (a stunning 35km long lake situated on the Waitomo-Rotorua tourist
route) but also provides information about significant other tourism
potential within the region. Construction has already begun on a 100km
long walking and cycling track adjacent to the Waikato River and six hydro
lakes which form our western and southern boundaries, with the first
section (from Arapuni village and incorporating the spectacular swing
bridge to the power station).
